Erythrai was an ancient Greek
city located in present-day western Turkey, near the modern town of
Ildırı. It was founded around the 6th century BC and was an important
port city in the region. The city was known for its sanctuary of
Athena, which was considered one of the most important religious
centers of the region. Erythrai was also known for its production of
pottery, which was highly valued in the ancient world. The city had a
significant role in the history of the region as it was conquered by
the Persians in the 5th century BC, and later by Alexander the Great in
the 4th century BC. During the Roman period, Erythrai continued to
thrive as a center of trade and commerce. The city was an important hub
for the transport of goods between the eastern Mediterranean and the
Black Sea. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Erythrai, which
include the sanctuary of Athena, a well-preserved theater, and the
city's ancient walls. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into the
history and culture of ancient Greece. [Bay Numismatics] |
