skythischer Stammesfürst, der seinen Einflußbereich im
heutigen Balkanraum erweiterte und etliche Griechenstädte unter
seine Kontrolle brachte. Drachmen mit einer Artemisbüste auf der
Vs. und der gleichen Rs. mit zusätzlichem Ethnikon von Kallatis
(SNG BM 200) legen diese Stadt als Prägeort nahe, es wurde aber
auch Herakleia Pontika vorgeschlagen. Seine Expansionspolitik brachte
Ataias zwangsläufig in Konflikt mit dem aufstrebenden
Makedonenreich unter Philippos II. Der Makedonenkönig versuchte
angeblich in den skythischen Machtbereich vorzudringen indem er vorgab,
eine Statue des Herakles an der Schwarzmeerküste aufstellen zu
wollen. In der entscheidenden Schlacht 339 v. Chr. fiel der
90-jährige Ataias.

Ataias was the most
powerful king of the Scythians, ruling an area from Thrace to the
Danube. According to R. Malcolm Errington "A History of Macedonia",
pg.56, Ataias (Atheas) asked Philip II of Macedonia to send soldiers to
assist him in his fight against the Greeks of Histria (which Philip
did) and also hinted that he would recognize Philip as his heir. In 340
Philip besieged the city of Byzantion and asked Ataias to return the
favour of military aid. He was refused and so in 339 he attacked
Ataias, then 90 years old. Ataias was killed and the Macedonian army
took 20000 slaves and 20000 mares. However on the return home the
Trballoi attacked the Macedonians with such fore that all the loot was
lost and Philip was luck to escape at all.
There are only a handful of Ataias' coins of all types known. The hemidrachm (SHH v 4484) is apparently the second discovered and the only one coin where the horse is depicted without the Scythian archer riding. [Auctioneer CNG, 2000] |
