Ariobarzanes 265-255 BC Ariobarzanes son
of Mithradates I acceded the throne of Pontos 265 BC. He kept
friendly relations with Heraclea Pontica and the Seleucid kingdom. He
managed to incorporate Amisus (Αμισός) in the kingdom but had a rising
conflict with the Gauls who invaded and pillaged his territories after
his death.
With the exception of the cities which were Hellenistic dominated, the rural population and the majority of the rich nobility of the kingdom were Iranians. This population preserved many cultural elements of Persian and even Hittite origin. The Persian zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda (Ohrmazd) was the patron deity of the dynasty. The economic and social structures were also of oriental character. Temples of various deities were the centrtes of commercial activity. These temples and the nobility owned large portions of agricultural lands which were cultivated by the slaves they owned. Ariobarzanes issued no coins in his name. He was succeeded by his son Mithradates II 255-220 BC |
