o'clock VF Inscription (Padishah Islama Tuda Mangu) around central circle with Jujid tamgha; all within triple border, the intermediate consisting of dots. Inscription ("Kalima" / him dedicated (?) / year 683 / struck in Qrim); all within triple border, the intermediate consisting of dots. "The Golden Horde was one of four
Mongol dynasties founded by sons and grandsons of Chingiz (Genghis)
Khan. The others were the Ilkhans, Chaghatayids, and the Chinese Yuan
Dynasty. This coin is a very rare silver Dirham (or Dang), 21 mm in
size and weighing 1.57 grams, from the reign of Toda Mangu, one of the
earliest Khans of the Golden Horde. It was struck in Qrim and is dated
AH 683. This is a rare reign, and Steve Album noted in his Checklist of
Islamic Coins (Album 2021) that all coins of Toda Mangu are anonymous
and are assigned to reign by date. This coin is much rarer type,
unknown outside of Russia and the Ukraine until recently, with Toda
Mangu’s name clearly written around the central tamga on the obverse.
The full obverse legend reads Padishah Islama Tuda Mangu. In my several
years of collecting coins of the Golden Horde, I have only managed to
acquire three of these. The other two will remain in my collection. All
three coins, plus another I was unable to acquire, have had chipped
flans like this one, but none is broken so as to affect the legends. I
would grade this coin an overall VF, maybe slightly better. The
legends, including Toda Mangu’s name, mint and date, are all clear."
